Genre - Action/Adventure/Drama/Biopic
Length - Feature
Logline - Wilderness of Dreams is
the true story of American shipping magnate Daniel Ludwig, who by 1964
had amassed the largest fortune the world had ever seen. An almost unknown

city in the middle of the Amazon jungle to harvest fast-growing paper
pulp trees. The movie reveals the clash between changing times and an
unchangeable jungle and the results of good intention corrupted by power.
Synopsis - Ludwig is among the
first in the world to profit from Arabian oil and after designing the
first supertanker, his fortune soon rivals that of both Howard Hughes
and Aristotle Onasiss. But eventually Ludwig grows bored and yearns
to do something meaningful with his money. When he learns of the discovery
of an amazingly fast-growing tree in Africa, he strikes a handshake
deal with the defacto military president of Brazil for millions of acres
of land. A giant hole in the jungle is cleared and his city of dreams
is born…
Over the course
of the first years, natural and man-made disasters cripple the industrial
complex of “Jari.” Ludwig’s ”magic” trees aren’t thriving and Ludwig
is forced to strip mine in order to keep Jari running. The government
of Brazil starts allowing deforestation and Jari becomes a center of
international tension with Ludwig branded the ugly American. Finally,
an untimely ferryboat disaster kills four hundred workers and their
families. It is a huge public catastrophe and symbolizes the end of
Ludwig’s dream. He bitterly leaves Brazil, losing half of his fortune
on Jari, two billion cash.
Wilderness of Dreams
ends with a scene of Ludwig in Jari. A beaten man, he surveys his creation,
and stops to examine one of his hybrid trees. Shortly later in his private
jet, he stops in Fordlandia, a successful, prosperous rubber-processing
city in Brazil that Henry Ford created in the 1920’s. We see Ludwig’s
private moment of undying regret, but we also see his bittersweet resignation,
as he realizes that however misguided, his intentions were pure.
