10. BUT...IT'S TRADITION
Author - Brenda Cregor
Genre - Family Comedy
Length - Feature

Logline - An ultra-frugal accountant must pay for his eldest daughter's wedding to a Mexican pig farmer whilst surviving a "brujera" curse put upon his beloved head of hair.

Synopsis - Poor Ernesto Lopez! Why wasn't this cheap-skate accountant born into a Jehovah's Witness family where holidays and birthdays are not celebrated?

Instead, in a short period of time, this penny-pinching father of five, must pay for a tuba which his daughter Blanca wants---even though there are no tubas in Mariachi bands; braces for Catalina ( who he insists does not have an obvious over-bite); a Quincianera for Maria ( who feels a sense of entitlement, being the second daughter in the family); a birthday for his chubby little son Pepe; and last, but not least, a ridiculously expensive Catholic wedding for his daughter, Lora, who is marrying a peasant pig farmer from Mexico,Juan.

Ernesto devises a plan to keep expenses in check, which includes having his wife, Polita, who yearns to be a more Americanized woman, do all the cooking for the reception. Only, he does not know, for the past several years, Polita has been feeding him packaged Mexican food, which eventually ruins Ernesto's theory that it is his wife's homemade Mexican food that keeps his hair so thick and black.

When the finances get tough, Ernesto approaches Lora's padrinos, Maxmio and Carlotta, ( wanna-be forty-something gangsters) who agree to help pay for the wedding expenses if Ernesto will set-up their gangster son, Julio, with Ernesto’s daughter, Maria.

When Ernesto refuses the "deal", Maximo and Carlotta go to a bruja (witch), who puts a curse on Ernesto's beloved head of hair just weeks before the wedding.

The curse begins to work, and Ernesto’s hair starts to fall out and turn white.

Ernesto soon discovers Polita cooking pre-packaged Mexican food and blames her for his hair loss. It is Nachita, Ernesto's mother, who convinces him that a curse has been put on him.

Ernesto goes with his mother to a good witch, who says she can counter the curse, if Ernesto will wear an outlandish cruz de caravaca, red underwear, shorts, and socks for two weeks; this means Ernesto will have to look like an idiot at his daughter's wedding.

To add to the turmoil, Lora's fiance's ( Juan) long lost mother, Isabelle shows up just before the wedding and Ernesto, whose heart begins to soften, invites his daughter’s dear friend, Pati, to join the family for a double wedding.

In the end, Ernesto decides that his financial investment is worth every memory that will be cherished from such a grand occasion, realizes his daughter's happiness is worth every hair on his head, and can't wait to "spare no expense" for his nagging mother's funeral.
