HOBO Charlie's
home life was less than perfect. Back in an era where there were no
laws protecting abused and battered children, no runaway shelters, or
foster homes in which he could turn to, Charlie decided he could no
longer stand the bullwhip beatings by his mother and hopped a train
in search of a new life, to become a REAL COWBOY, a life void of abuse,
depression, and despair, and determined that living on his own couldn't
be any worse than living under a destructive 'iron fist.' But Charlie's delusions of grandeur were quickly dismissed as he found the life of a Hobo anything but carefree and safe, as his adventures take him down a spiraling path of life-altering events, having to fend off Hobos and the infamous Railway Bulls, losing one of the only true friends he ever had, and finally, beaten to within a few breaths shy of losing his own life. But there is a faint glimmer of hope left for Charlie... 4.
WILDERNESS OF DREAMS Over the course of the first years, natural and man-made disasters cripple the industrial complex of “Jari.” Ludwig’s ”magic” trees aren’t thriving and Ludwig is forced to strip mine in order to keep Jari running. The government of Brazil starts allowing deforestation and Jari becomes a center of international tension with Ludwig branded the ugly American. Finally, an untimely ferryboat disaster kills four hundred workers and their families. It is a huge public catastrophe and symbolizes the end of Ludwig’s dream. He bitterly leaves Brazil, losing half of his fortune on Jari, two billion cash. Wilderness of Dreams ends with a scene of Ludwig in Jari. A beaten man, he surveys his creation, and stops to examine one of his hybrid trees. Shortly later in his private jet, he stops in Fordlandia, a successful, prosperous rubber-processing city in Brazil that Henry Ford created in the 1920’s. We see Ludwig’s private moment of undying regret, but we also see his bittersweet resignation, as he realizes that however misguided, his intentions were pure. 5. FANCY
PANTS To afford an experimental
operation to save Bear's life, Marlene faces the necessity of selling
Star King and their other four horses. Bear won’t hear of it. No hospital
bill will claim his horses. Instead, they’ll give their horses away
to kids! In exchange the kids will give them back foals, which Bob will
sell to pay off debts. They’re deluged with letters. They keep Star
King, but give away horses to shy CASSIE, poor TRISH, lonely JILL, and
JEREMY in leg braces. The Hegwoods are famous matchmakers. But Marlene
has doubts about all this. She still wants her unattainable dream. Cassie, so shy and
troubled she’s failing classes, begins to compete on Snowball. Cassie
loses her first competitions, and is mocked by other, richer kids because
of her cheap equipment. Marlene's pride
and joy is a fancy show saddle, given to her by Bob as a wedding gift.
It’s the saddle she planned to use in the Olympics. Intruders attack
Cassie and blind one of the horses, stealing the saddle. When suspicion
falls on Reese, he sets out to get the saddle back. However, he’s killed
in an auto accident. Marlene and Bob mourn deeply. Reese was like Bob’s
own son. To Marlene’s surprise,
Cassie's astute observations help solve the crime and clear Reese's
name. But it’s too late for Cocoa, the blinded horse. But Bob won't
give up on anyone. He retrains Cocoa and surprises everyone when she
rides again in competition—and wins! Bob, who now suffers from diabetes
and an amputated foot, doesn't believe in letting a disability keep
you from great things. Marlene works hard to keep everybody together
and happy, pushing aside her dreams. Cassie, more confident, finds the courage to enter the national 4-H Olympics. But she starts to become something of a “fancy pants,” wanting to be like all the rich girls. She whines that there's no way she can win on Snowball, and when Cassie cops a “fancy pants, I deserve more attitude,” Marlene teaches
her a lesson or two. Then gives her Star King! Bear and Marlene are
proud “parents” indeed, and Marlene has realized her Olympics dream
through Cassie, who has learned humility. In turn, Cassie
gives Snowball to Tony, who can finally realize his dream of being an
African-American cowboy. But there's one horse left to give...Reese's.
When Bear tries to find the perfect horse for JENAE, a little girl facing
heart surgery, Reese's father suggests Reese’s big, but gentle animal.
Marlene takes pride in the people from across the country who learn
of the “man who gives horses away.” Bear even has a card stamped with
that phrase. But what’s left for Marlene? What of her dream for a family
with Bear? It happens that Christmas. Bear and Marlene Hegwood finally find the Christmas they've always wanted—a house full of kids. Dozens show up to thank Bear and Marlene for changing their lives with the horses. That Christmas Eve, the kids watch along with Bear and Marlene as a beautiful foal is born in their barn, signaling hope and a better future for the Illinois rancher and his wife. She realizes how special Cassie’s been to their lives, a nice fancy pants indeed.
